We Believe Everyone. Except the Jews.

Someone told me I warn about antisemitism because I’m paid to. That’s not an argument. It’s the oldest trope there is, and it’s how the wedge goes in.

A note from Lawrence

Someone suggested online that I write about rising antisemitism because I’m paid to. A person who believes he’s one of the good guys reached for the oldest slander in the Western canon, the Jew whose words are bought, and aimed it at a Jew warning about antisemitism. The insult demonstrated the thing it was meant to dismiss.

So here are my receipts. I’ve called what Netanyahu is doing in Gaza a genocide, in print, during the High Holidays. I’ve defended trans people, women, and Black officials in the same breath as Jews, because it’s always “all of us,” never “us alone.” If someone were paying me to shield Israel, it would be the worst-managed bribe in history. What’s left is the trope, and how it splits a coalition at the worst possible time.
