Trump Renames Artificial Intelligence After the One Thing It Isn’t Yet

The executive order tells every federal agency to say “Super Intelligence,” then assigns someone to figure out what that means.

A note from Lawrence

At the UN General Assembly the president announced that artificial intelligence would henceforth be called “super intelligence” in every United States document, because “artificial” makes it “sound fake and it is not fake.” A week later, after lunch with a table of tech executives, he signed the executive order. Let’s be clear: it is artificial. That is the whole point of the word. People built it, in buildings, with money.

The best part is that “superintelligence” was already a word, and it means something specific: a machine smarter than every human at everything, the hypothetical finish line serious researchers argue about whether we survive. The order renames the technology after the one thing it isn’t yet, then assigns someone to figure out what that means.
