El-Sayed Disavowed the Muslim Brotherhood on the Spot. Tommy Wouldn’t Disavow Sh!t.
A former Josh Hawley staffer demanded that Michigan’s Muslim Senate nominee disavow the Muslim Brotherhood. He did, on the spot. “Tommy” couldn’t disavow putting his own religion into our laws.
A note from Lawrence
At a Michigan town hall, a young man named Tommy demanded that Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic Senate nominee, disavow the Muslim Brotherhood. El-Sayed said yes on the spot, asked why the question was being asked, and handed it back: Would Tommy disavow reading religious doctrine into American law? Tommy said no. Journalist Marisa Kabas then identified him as a former operations director for Sen. Josh Hawley.
I break down El-Sayed’s answer in three moves, and why I want it taught in every debate class. Then I put it next to Hawley’s own press release, “The Christian Nationalism We Need,” and PRRI’s finding that 32% of Americans are Christian nationalism adherents or sympathizers. I close with a plan: Ask Tommy’s question back, find out who the polished questioners work for, and vote.
