You Asked for the Security Key Guide. Here It Is.
Plain-language, tap-by-tap instructions for locking down your accounts, your phone, and your privacy, written for people who would rather not think about any of it.
A note from Lawrence
On Fucked Up Friday I talked about the little hardware keys I keep telling everyone I love to buy, and my inbox did something it almost never does on a Friday: it filled up with people asking for the instructions. So here they are, all of them, tap by tap. I wrote the guide for my friends first, for people who’d rather not think about any of this.
The core costs about $60: two security keys, one for your keychain and one hidden at home. A key checks the real address of the website before it answers, so a fake login page gets nothing, and there’s no code to read back to the nice man from “your bank.” The rest takes three sittings of about an hour each: a password manager, your main accounts, a lock on your phone number, and your phone and computer. Pick a family safe word this weekend. And follow the no-lockout rules: two keys on every account.
