The Right Just Discovered Tillamook’s Halal Cheese. They’re About 10 Years Late.
The cheese didn’t change. A vegetarian enzyme did its job in 2016, and America’s outrage machine just declared jihad on cheddar.
A note from Lawrence
The outrage machine discovered a little “Certified Halal” mark on Tillamook cheddar and lost its mind. Someone called it “Al-Qaeda cheese.” The terrifying truth: in 2016, Tillamook switched to a fermentation-made rennet to keep its cheese from tasting bitter, and that rennet happens to qualify as kosher and halal. That’s the jihad. A microbe did its job.
As a secular Jew who skipped his bar mitzvah on purpose, I can report that forty percent of America’s packaged food is kosher-certified, and not one bite has made me more Jewish. So welcome, Tillamook, to the Dumb Boycott Hall of Fame, alongside plain Starbucks cups, smashed Keurigs, burning Nikes, and machine-gunned Bud Light.
