In Between
A gay, half-Jewish Gen Xer tries to go home.
A note from Lawrence
I couldn’t get Linkin Park’s “In Between” out of my head, and for good reason. I had just moved back to Indiana after thirty years on the West Coast, to be near my aging mother, in the middle of my second divorce, after seven months of looking for work in the only career I’d ever had.
The country was in its own in-between, an interregnum between the old world and whatever clown car is coming next. Like Dante, I found myself in a dark forest with the straight way lost. This short piece is where I stopped apologizing for being in between, and started writing it down.
